ABOUT PROJECT SAFE & WHAT WE OFFER

Project SAFE is an sexual health and youth empowerment program based in Brooklyn, NY. Check out what we offer down below!

ABOUT PROJECT SAFE

Project SAFE of Family Health Centers at NYU Langone has been providing sexual health education, teen leadership training, and peer education programming since 1989 at our Project Reach Youth site in Brooklyn. Project SAFE both teaches sex ed classes throughout Brooklyn and NYC and provides youth development training through our afterschool programming. In doing this, our programs trains youth between the ages of 11 and 24 to provide life-saving information to their peers through workshops, performances, and community outreach. Project SAFE provides youth with the support and the opportunities they need to not only make the best decisions regarding their own sexual health but also to develop to their full potential and become agents of change in their communities.

OUR VISION

We seek to champion youth development while also promoting sexual health and sexual health literacy. We believe that this approach leads to the empowerment of individuals and communities to better utilize their existing strengths and better access culturally appropriate resources concerning their sexual health. This empowerment doesn’t end with our students’ sexual health; in teaching students skills to better advocate for their sexual health, we also equip them to advocate for themselves in all aspects of the rest of their lives.

OUR STRATEGY

OUR HISTORY

Project SAFE was founded at the height of AIDS epidemic as a way to provide information about HIV safety to the Brooklyn community. Our founders knew that the best way to keep people healthy is to have people take care of each other, so Project SAFE was created with the intention of training young people to go out into their communities and share vital and life-saving information. We keep the legacy of these activists alive with our peer education model and our emphasis on sexual health and reproductive justice advocacy.

  • Educating members of our community about healthy practices and encouraging them to make healthy decisions.

  • Providing people with as many opportunities to get tested as possible.

  • Working with a group of young people enrolled in our SAFE programs to holistically nurture them and create a widely cast support system for them.

  • Training SAFE youth to be Peer Educators and promote the SAFE lifestyle in their communities.

  • Connecting our community to services available to them.

  • Using the arts to communicate our message of safe sex awareness and prevention to empower and enrich our community’s culture.

  • Creating and maintaining an ever-fresh, ever-evolving, and always SAFE lifestyle that is inclusive to everyone.

WHAT WE OFFER

Project SAFE seeks to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS by empowering young people to protect themselves and others with the knowledge and resources necessary to make healthy decisions. Project SAFE is a space for teenagers to learn, grow, express themselves, and extend the embrace of safety into their own communities. This is achieved through our peer education program, community events, outreach efforts, and the Project SAFE Teen Health Clinic.
